Introduction
Perhaps one of the most surprising things about me is that I consider studying to be one of my main hobbies. Not studying the old fashioned way, behind a desk as some professor recites his lines for the 40th year in a row. No, I enjoy studying the world around me; it's what gives me ideas and gets the creative juices flowing--asking why did it happen this way, or what is unique about this person, place, or situation. As for my own personal situation, I am one of the innumerous Americans who have skidded the ocean to take up residence in France. Having studied the language quite intensively (majoring in it actually, along with history) I really learned the language by living here, just marinating in it. My years as a student in France gave me a perfect hub from which to explore various European countries. Not knowing that my stay would be permanent, I liken my need to travel at that time to that of someone who knows they only have a year to live and want to do it all. Had to see the countries before that same trip would invariably involve hopping the Atlantic. When not traveling and writing,I work as a language trainer in Grenoble, France, nestled in the heart of the Alps. As soon as the chance comes around, I either head to the slopes, drive down to somewhere in the south of France, or make a yearly pilgrimage back to the Mississippi homes of my family and friends and then work on pressing something creative out of those experiences.
Experience & Expertise
I have lived in France since 2004, after a one year exchange program somehow grew into something more permanent. I regularly make trips back to my native land of Mississippi to fill up on sweet tea, grits, and everything creole from neighboring New Orleans. So far, I have spent a week in the Barcelona rain, attended John Paul II's last midnight mass in the Vatican, been introduced to an authentic Voodoo priest, sailed in the icy summer waters of Brittany, had my ears blown out at the Glasgow Bagpipe festival, and hitchiked from Trieste, Italy to Budapest. Those are not all of my adventures, and more are soon to come! Before whirlwinding around western Europe, I earned a Bachelor's Degree (summa cum laude) in both History and French at the University of Southern Mississippi. A Masters degree in English Studies/American Civilization soon followed from the Université Stendhal-Grenoble 3.
