Introduction
My love affair with China began in the spring of 1984 when I took my first trip to China. I was fascinated by this mysterious, exotic country, and 24 years later I am still going to China. I even moved to Beijing for two years where I worked as a copy editor for China Daily. Over the years I've self-published mini-guides to Beijing, and in 2007 published a coffee table book of my favorite photos taken over the years. I worked as an reporter/editor/photographer/publisher of community and daily newspapers for 25 years. I have been in 43 of the 50 states, including Alaska where I lived for seven years, and have made numerous trips to Europe. But China remains my passion, and I return about every other year, most recently in March 2008. On years I don't go to China, my husband and I go to Europe. We pick one city and spend a week exploring it, with maybe a day trip or two out of town. I've found the best independent travel trips (airfare and hotel combos) are for weeklong trips. When I was in my 20s, if I couldn't spend at least a month in Europe each trip, I didn't want to go. Now that I'm a senior citizen, I'm finding a week is just the right length.
